Life is For Living

Together we can make a brighter future for adults with learning disabilities

Welcome to Acorn Village – proudly supporting adults with learning disabilities

We are a charity based in Mistley, Essex, that provides residential and supported living facilities and care and support for adults with learning disabilities. We believe that life is for living and we put people first, disability second ensuring everyone meets their full potential in a nurturing environment.

Acorn Village was set up more than 50 years ago by a determined group of families that wanted a different approach to caring for their children with learning disabilities as they become adults.

Our objectives are met through daytime activities which encourage social interaction, learning new life skills, crafting, gardening, education, active leisure and entertainment. These activities are also open to adults with learning disabilities living in the wider community as well. Our family-centred ethos puts residents, staff, volunteers and their families at their heart of everything we do.

At our purpose built Creative Craft Centre activities such as art and textiles are supported by skilled staff looking to explore an individual’s creativity.  Media, photography, drama and poetry groups are well attended with displays and performances used to showcase the work that somebody has achieved.  The centre encourages active interests such as bike riding, cookery, carpet bowls, gardening and off site sessions such as swimming and horse riding.

Our residents and tenants also access educational opportunities at adult education centres.  Relaxation is not forgotten, a therapeutic sensory room has been developed and individuals can access drama and music therapy.  All possibilities are explored and a person with a specific interest will be encouraged and supported to achieve their goals.

A coffee shop is available on site, a service also to the general public thus offering a further opportunity for integration.  Likewise our two charity shops, one on the Acorn main site and one in Manningtree give an insight to others about Acorn Village whilst helping to raise funds.

So why not come and visit us, we’d love to see you! You can also learn about the difference we have made to the lives of adults with learning disabilities by reading our latest Impact Report
