Support us – Volunteer

Acorn would not be the place it is today without the volunteers who have throughout the years given their time to support adults with learning disabilities.

Not only giving the gift of time they also share their skills with other volunteers, staff and the adults with learning disabilities they meet.

We have a range of volunteers from all walks of life offering qualities such as reliability, flexibility, logical thinking, commitment and artistic ability.

With the vast opportunities available at Acorn Village we aim to match your skill set and interests to the area you will excel at.

Why Volunteer?

We’ve spoken to our volunteers and they have told us they volunteer for reasons such as:

  • Meeting new people & making new friends
  • Feeling they really make a difference to the charity
  • Learning new skills
  • CV Experience
  • Discovering hidden treasures in the donations
  • Rewarding & fun
  • Being part of a team

Commitment

Depending on your volunteer role will depend on the amount of commitment required.
Our Charity Shops need cover throughout the week so potentially you may be able to commit to one morning a week or every two weeks or if suits twice a week. If you can give a couple of hours every week then donation sorting or joining our e-bay team may suit you or perhaps gardening may suit you better. We are grateful for your gift of time and will work with you to use this time wisely.

Fundraising

If you can give a few hours a month or year then fundraising volunteering is for you.

From running Events, helping on a Stall at Events, selling items at Carboot Sales to Running Quiz Nights.

If you can help offsite you might run a carboot stall with donations that aren’t suitable for the shops or an information stall at a local event.

You could also by just simply spreading the word about Acorn Village and building our relationships throughout the community.

Online sales

We are lucky enough to have some very dedicated e-bay volunteers who are looking for more people to expand the ever growing online sales.

Based onsite you will research donated items, list, package and be fully involved with the financial outcomes to ensure you see just how big a difference you make.

Charity Shop

We have a shop in Manningtree High Street and an onsite Charity Shop.

These are run by volunteers who restock, price and sell the donated items. They also ensure the shop is tidy and items sold are in good condition and clean. They do a wonderful job and keep the Manningtree shop open 6 days a week (onsite 5 days). Our onsite shop, although quieter, offers the opportunity to see first hand what charity funds go towards, enhancing the lives of with adults with learning disabilities.

Regular volunteering is key to keeping the shops open, if you can commit on a weekly or fortnightly basis we would love to hear from you.

We also need emergency volunteers to cover sickness and holidays so please do get in contact if this is something you could help with.

Onsite Donations

People generously donate their unwanted items to enable us to stock the charity shop, sell on e-bay and use in the Creative Craft Centre.

These items need sorting, organising, preparing and researching and our team of volunteers kindly take on the challenge. Could you join them and to help generate the most possible outcome from donations.

This is the perfect opportunity for those who can only volunteer from a couple to hours or more.

Gardening
The tranquil environment of a walled garden, flowerbeds and fields play an important part at Acorn Village.

It’s a lot to manage and volunteers can help either by coming up and tending to different areas either weekly, once a month or 3 times a year working solo or with other volunteers.

There is also the opportunity to work with adults with learning disabilities to tend to the vegetable patch or grow flowers from seed.

Creative Craft Centre

Thanks to generous donations we have an exciting opportunity for volunteers to use their creative skills directly at Acorn Village working with adults with learning disabilities.

Whether it’s working on a group project or knowledge sharing with individuals there is a world of creativity that awaits.

Current volunteers help with the Media Groups keeping clients up to date with the latest news, help with external group excursions, run monthly music sessions as well as working directly with textiles and art within the creative sessions.
